Celebrate the 50th Day of School with 50's Day!
This is the parent letter we send out.
For math, we make patterns using precut black and pink construction paper.
Here is the pattern page.
We also count to 50, write numbers to 50, and tally to 50.
Number grid and tally sheet.
We have a hula hooping contest for all the classes as part of our "sock hop."
Also at the sock hop, we teach the twist, the swim, and the hand jive.
Here is a video of our 50s day.

For social studies, we look at pictures of the 1950's and talk about similarities and differences. We look at things like clothing, hairstyles, telephones, televisions, cars, computers, soda fountains, Barbie, Mickey Mouse, etc.
We finish off the time with Chocolate Coke Floats
(Vanilla Ice Cream, Chocolate Syrup, Caffeine Free Coke.)
I have a volunteer take a picture of each child by our blow-up juke box http://www.orientaltrading.com/ and then print it out. We glue it in our journals and write about our day.
We got this idea and tweaked it from Shari Sloane at http://www.kidscount1234.com/
